Beyond the Village: The Power of Believing in a Child’s Future
Before Sauti Village, there was a boy named David. His story is a stark, powerful reminder of what can happen when a child’s circumstances do not get the final say.
Before the foundation, before the structured programmes, and long before the dream of a permanent sanctuary for children in Mathare, there was a boy whose future could easily have been swallowed whole by the world around him.
That boy was David.
His story was not gentle. Growing up in the suffocating grip of extreme poverty, he was forced to navigate adult-sized burdens no child should ever carry alone. By the age of nine—a time when a child should be dreaming, playing, and skinning knees on football pitches—David found himself inside a prison cell. To the world looking in, the trajectory of his life seemed tragically written. The doors seemed permanently shut.
But his story refused to end in that darkness.
Through the quiet grace of mentorship, timely guidance, and the relentless intervention of people who looked past his circumstances to see his humanity, David’s life began to shift. The boy who desperately needed someone to believe in his hidden potential grew into a man determined to ensure no other child in Mathare feels forgotten.
Today, we know him as Jey Mbiro—the founder and beating heart behind Sauti Village Foundation.
There is something profoundly moving about this full-circle journey: a child who once needed someone to reach into the shadows and pull him out has dedicated his life to throwing open doors for others.
And perhaps that is where the story of Sauti Village truly begins: not in an office or a legal document, but in the unshakable conviction that a child’s beginning should never be mistaken for their ending.
What Happens When Horizons Expand?
What occurs in the heart of a child when the walls of limitation suddenly fall away? What happens when a young person from an underserved community steps across an invisible boundary, locks eyes with someone who believes in them, and glimpses a world of endless possibility?
This is the question that fuels Sauti Village Foundation, a community-based mentorship initiative rooted in Mathare, Nairobi. We exist to expand children’s horizons through education, deep mentorship, creative expression, talent development, and access to life-changing opportunities.
We lovingly call the young people in our care our Champs. Right now, there are 35 of them, aged 8 to 18.
Our mission is simple yet radical: to help them realize that their futures carry far more weight, beauty, and possibility than their current hardships could ever define.
One Story. A Responsibility to Many More.
Sauti Village grew directly out of Jey Mbiro’s lived experience and his deep, personal understanding of how a single guiding hand can alter a destiny. His journey—from the dark corridors of early hardship to a life of purposeful leadership—is captured in his book, Footsteps From Poverty.
The name Sauti means “voice” in Swahili. It is our promise that every child will be heard, cherished, and given the sacred room to discover who they are meant to be.
Operating under Sauti One, Inc., a US-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with our heart and operations grounded in Nairobi, we have spent the past three years reaching children who are among the most vulnerable in Mathare—especially those who have no other safety net or structured support.
Why 35 Champs?
Because real, soul-shaping mentorship cannot be rushed or mass-produced. It requires time, emotional presence, consistency, and lasting relationships. Our responsibility is not to chase numbers for a report, but to ensure that every single child already in our care receives deep, intentional, and unwavering support.
Yet, we know there are hundreds more waiting outside our doors. Growing responsibly means building the foundation to welcome them in without compromising the love and care we have promised to our 35.
Reaching them requires a larger family—more hearts, more mentors, and more partners willing to walk this road with us.
Adopt-a-Saturday: Opening Doors to New Possibilities,The most profound life lessons rarely happen behind a desk.
Sometimes, transformation happens over a shared breakfast. Sometimes, it takes root during an intimate conversation with a professional whose career the children never knew existed. And sometimes, it begins with the quiet awe of realizing that a space that once felt foreign is a place where they truly belong.
Our Adopt-a-Saturday initiative creates experiential bridges, allowing partners to open their worlds to our Champs.
These Saturdays are as unique as the partners who host them. They can feature career storytelling, skill workshops, artistic exploration, recreational outings, or simply dedicated time spent sharing wisdom and laughter.
On Sunday, 11 October 2026, our Champs experienced an extraordinary day at the home of Madam Lillian Ngala, hosted by the Lillian Ngala Foundation.
It was a day filled with warmth, shared meals, laughter, and uplifting mentorship. Madam Lillian Ngala and her team opened their doors and hearts, creating an environment where our Champs felt embraced, valued, and deeply celebrated.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Madam Lillian Ngala and the Lillian Ngala Foundation for granting our children a memory that will inspire them for years to come.
Days like these remind us that our children do not need another lecture on how important their futures are. They need the room to touch, taste, and experience those futures for themselves.
Adopt-a-Saturday offers families, organizations, and individuals a tangible, deeply personal way to make a difference. You don’t need an elaborate setup or a massive budget; all it takes is a willing heart, an open space, and a desire to give a child a brand-new lens through which to see the world.
Taking the Mission to the Golf Course
Pure intention is the spark, but sustainable resources are the engine of change. To keep our promises to these children, we rely on strategic partnerships and dedicated allies.
Our annual Sauti Village Charity Golf Tournament is one of our primary platforms for bringing together people who believe in changing young lives.
The third edition will take place on 11 December 2026 at Limuru Country Club, held during the prestigious Captain’s Week. We look forward to welcoming approximately 250 golfers, including corporate executives, industry leaders, international guests, and members of the vibrant Kenyan diaspora.
While there will certainly be great golf, spirited competition, and warm camaraderie on the greens, the true heart of the day lies far beyond the 18th hole.
This tournament is a gathering of purpose—a place where influential leaders align their resources with social impact. We are actively inviting corporate sponsors, partners, and donors to join us for this event, helping us fuel our ongoing programmes and take another step toward our long-term vision.
A Permanent Home for Sauti Village
Adopt-a-Saturday creates moments of wonder. Partnerships build our strength. The Charity Golf Tournament mobilizes vital resources.
But our hearts are fixed on building a permanent anchor for this vision.
Our long-term ambition is to build a permanent Sauti Village centre.
We envision a dedicated, safe haven in Nairobi: a physical space where continuous mentorship, holistic learning, creative arts, and talent development can flourish daily. A permanent home will provide our work with structural stability and give us the capacity to open our arms to many more children in Mathare who currently walk without support.
A dream of this magnitude requires more than goodwill. It demands strategic collaboration, financial commitment, and visionary partners who understand that building a home for these children is an investment in the future of our entire community.
We are laying the stones for that future, one relationship at a time.
There Is Room for You in This Story
At Sauti Village, we refuse to sit back while a child’s potential is smothered by hardship. We believe every child deserves more than just permission to dream—they deserve the relationships, tools, and practical pathways to turn those dreams into reality.
