How Equity Afya Is Transforming Healthcare in Kenya
Healthcare remains one of the biggest challenges for families in Kenya especially when it comes to accessing quality and affordable medical services. Equity Afia is stepping in to change that narrative by bringing essential healthcare closer to communities across the country.
Equity Afia is a network of outpatient medical centres operating under the Equity Group Foundation’s Health pillar. It was established in 2015 to improve access to quality, affordable, and standardized healthcare services in Kenya particularly for underserved and low-income communities.
Equity Afia operates like a franchise model, empowering qualified doctors and medical professionals who are alumni of the Equity Leaders Program (ELP) to run and manage clinics in their own communities.

What Problem Is Equity Afia Addressing?
Many Kenyans face barriers to healthcare, including:
1.High cost of medical services
2.Limited access in rural and peri-urban areas
3.Fragmented quality across private clinics
4.Long waits at public facilities

Equity Afia directly tackles these challenges by ensuring that:
1.Healthcare services are affordable and transparent
2.Clinics are located closer to communities
3.Services are delivered by trained medical professionals
4.Quality and standards are consistent across all centres
In doing so, Equity Afia also contributes to Kenya’s broader goals for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by reducing financial risk and enhancing access to essential health services.

What Services Do They Offer?
Equity Afia clinics are full service outpatient health centres providing:
a)General medical consultations
b)Specialist clinics
c)Laboratory testing and diagnostics
d)Pharmacy services
e)Dental care
f)Optical care
g)Mother & child health services
h)Nutrition and chronic disease management
i)Preventive care, immunizations, and wellness programs
Some clinics even integrate advanced tools like AI assisted diagnostic support to improve service accuracy.

Equity Afia has grown rapidly since its launch and now has over 100 medical centres across Kenya. The network expanded significantly in recent years, growing from around 47 clinics to more than 102 facilities serving diverse urban and rural communities.
Branches are spread widely across the country including counties such as:
Nairobi (CBD, Buruburu, Eastleigh, Embakasi, Kahawa West, etc.)
Nakuru, Nyeri, Kisumu, Kakamega
Mombasa, Kwale, Busia, Migori
Bomet, Iten, Nyamira, Mpeketoni
Many other townships and peri-urban areas
Each clinic is staffed by qualified doctors, nurses, lab technicians, and support staff to ensure professional care for patients.

How Equity Afia Is Making a Difference
1. Affordable Healthcare Services
Equity Afia clinics aim to bridge the gap between expensive private hospitals and overburdened public facilities. They offer reliable medical care at prices many Kenyans can afford, helping to protect families from high out-of-pocket costs.
2. Community Presence & Accessibility
By placing clinics in local neighbourhoods including areas often overlooked by larger hospital chains the network ensures that people don’t have to travel long distances for basic care.
3. Preventive and Promotive Health
Equity Afia focuses not just on treating illness but also on preventing disease through health education, immunization drives, and wellness campaigns that encourage healthy lifestyles.
4. Standardized Quality Care
With a unified system and professional standards across locations, patients can expect consistent care anywhere within the network unlike many small, independent clinics.
Equity Afia has ambitious plans to expand further targeting hundreds more clinics across East and Central Africa, with a long-term goal of establishing 1,000 healthcare facilities by 2030. This expansion will continue to improve access to quality healthcare for more people across the region.
