NSSF Plants 2 Million Trees at Migaa Golf Estate: A Win for Community and the Environment
Environmental conservation and community engagement are gaining traction across Kenya, and one of the most inspiring initiatives in recent months has been led by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). In 2025, NSSF partnered with Migaa Golf Estate, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, and the Finnet Trust Foundation to embark on a major tree planting campaign aimed at planting 2 million trees nationwide including a high impact event at Migaa Golf Estate in Kiambu County.
As part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, NSSF marked the occasion with a Kamiti River riparian restoration exercise and tree planting event at Migaa Golf Estate on August 8, 2025. The event combined environmental stewardship with sport, bringing together stakeholders for a day of tree planting and golf blending purpose with play.
Representatives from NSSF, including the Board of Trustees Chairman David Kariuki Njeru and other officials, joined partners from Migaa Golf Club to plant seedlings along the estate’s riverine and forested areas. The ceremony highlighted the Fund’s growing commitment to sustainable development and responsible community engagement.

Why the Tree‑Planting Campaign Matters
1. Supporting Kenya’s Climate Goals
The initiative aligns with the national push to increase Kenya’s forest cover and combat climate change. In 2024, President William Ruto launched a nationwide campaign to plant over 5 billion trees, part of a broader effort to restore degraded landscapes and reduce carbon emissions.
2. Enhancing Environmental Health
Tree planting protects water catchment areas, prevents soil erosion, and helps restore ecosystems particularly along rivers like the Kamiti River, which benefits from improved riparian cover.
3. Community and Strategic Impact
By linking tree planting with community spaces like Migaa Golf Estate, the initiative fosters environmental awareness among local residents, sports communities, and private sector partners. It also contributes to socio economic growth by creating greener, healthier environments for leisure and residential communities.

The Migaa golf event was part of NSSF’s larger tree planting campaign targeting 2 million trees across Kenya during the 2025/26 financial year. In collaborating with the Labour Ministry and local partners, NSSF’s drive is designed to:
1.Advance Vision 2030 goals for sustainable development
2.Support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
3.Champion environmental conservation as part of national climate action strategies
The initiative reflects a growing emphasis by Kenyan institutions on sustainability, civic responsibility, and environmental stewardship as core components of community development.
