FAWEK: Empowering Girls, Transforming Generations

In the quiet corners of rural Kenya and the bustling corridors of urban schools, something powerful is happening. Girls who once sat silently on the sidelines are now raising their hands, their voices, and their ambitions. At the heart of this transformation is FAWEK, the Forum for African Women Educationalists Kenya Chapter, an organization rewriting the story of education, one girl at a time.

FAWEK is a national chapter of the larger FAWE (Forum for African Women Educationalists) network, a Pan-African NGO founded in 1992. FAWEK is on a mission to ensure girls and women in Kenya have access to quality education, training, and opportunities because when a girl is educated, the ripple effect reaches her family, her community, and her country.

But FAWEK doesn’t just talk about equality. They work at the grassroots level to remove the barriers social, economic, and cultural that keep girls from the classroom.

What FAWEK Does

  1. Scholarships and Sponsorships: FAWEK provides financial support for girls from vulnerable backgrounds so they can attend and complete school.
  2. Mentorship and Life Skills: Through mentorship programs, girls learn to dream bigger and navigate life’s challenges with confidence.
  3. STEM for Girls: FAWEK is breaking stereotypes by encouraging girls to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math.
  4. Gender-Responsive Schools: FAWEK trains teachers and school leaders to create safe, inclusive learning environments that meet the needs of both girls and boys.
  5. Policy Advocacy: FAWEK influences education policies at both county and national levels to ensure gender equality is woven into the fabric of Kenya’s education system.

In Kenya, many girls still face an uphill battle when it comes to education. Early marriages, poverty, period stigma, and outdated cultural norms often stand in the way of their learning journey. But FAWEK believes education isn’t just a privilege, it’s a right.

An educated girl is:

  1. Less likely to be married off early
  2. More likely to raise a healthy family
  3. Able to contribute economically and lead confidently
  4. A changemaker in her community
